Your End-of-Year Performance Audit (Most Musicians Skip This…)
How to Honestly Evaluate Your Year as a Performer (And Step Into Next Year Stronger)
As musicians and performers, we spend so much time looking forward. Maybe toward the next gig, the next setlist, the next opportunity. We rarely pause to look back.
But reflection is one of the most powerful tools you have.
Before stepping into a brand-new year, take a few minutes to look at the performer you became over the last twelve months. Even if your year was chaotic or slower than you had hoped, there’s real growth buried inside your experiences.
Let's do a simple recap exercise to help you find it.
Start With Your Wins (You Have More Than You Think)
Most performers underestimate how much progress they’ve made.
Ask yourself:
- What were your favorite gigs this year, and why?
- Where did you feel most confident on stage?
- What new skills did you improve? (vocals, musicianship, stage presence, crowd engagement…?)
- Did you make any important connections — venues, wedding vendors, photographers, DJs, other musicians, or fans?
- What moments made you think, “This is why I perform”?
Maybe it was a song that finally clicked.
Maybe it was a crowd that sang with you.
Maybe it was a tiny moment only you noticed, but it reminded you why you love performing in the first place.
Those moments matter more than you realize.
Now… Be Honest About What Didn’t Go Well (Without Beating Yourself Up)
This part isn’t about negativity. It’s about clarity.
Reflect on:
- Which gigs didn’t go the way you expected?
- When did you feel unprepared or overwhelmed?
- What drained your energy more than it should have?
- Which goals did you set but not hit — and why?
- What technical, musical, or communication issues tripped you up?
Even the best performers in the world experience tough shows and unexpected curveballs.
Those moments don’t define you. They shape you.
Deeper Questions That Shape Your Future
This is where real growth starts. Ask yourself:
- What did this year teach me about my strengths?
- What did it reveal about my weaknesses?
- What opportunities opened up that I want to pursue?
- What parts of my performance am I excited to improve next year?
Crowd engagement?
Stage confidence?
Consistency?
Setlists?
Public speaking?
Musicianship?
Organization and preparation?
Knowing these answers gives you a roadmap for growth.
If You Performed This Year (Even Once), You Grew
Maybe your year was incredible.
Maybe it was tough.
Most of us are somewhere in between.
But if you practiced, performed, learned from someone else, tried something new, or even thought about improving…
That’s progress.
And next year is simply the next chapter in your story.
What Was Your Year Like?
I’d love to hear from you.
- What was your biggest win?
- What was your most important lesson learned?
- What you want to improve next year?
Let’s grow together. And here’s to an amazing next chapter.
